TNM Super League clubs are yet to receive subventions pledged by Football Association of Malawi (FAM), sponsors TNM plc and Super League of Malawi (Sulom) president Fleetwood Haiya.

The 16 flagship football league clubs are expecting the revised K66 million subvention from the league’s official sponsors TNM plc which translates to about K4.1 million each team.

Pledged K7 million subvention for each club before his election: Haiya

On the other hand, FAM promised the clubs K5 million each under the Fifa Forward 3 Programme which translates to K80 million while Haiya pledged K7 million subvention for each club before his election, translating to K112 million.

This means roughly, the teams are supposed to get about K16.1 million each.

But with the 2023 edition currently underway, some teams have said they are yet to get the subventions.

In an interview yesterday, Silver Strikers acting chief executive officer Faith Mzungu-Vilakati said: “We have not received from any of the three, but Sulom have just sent us forms to complete relating to the FAM subventions.”

Mighty Mukuru Wanderers director of commercialisation Clement Stambuli, who is also the club’s spokesperson, said: “The last time I checked, we had not received the subventions.”

On his part, FCB Nyasa Bullets chief administration officer Albert Chigoga also said they are yet to get the subventions.

Red Lions spokesperson Joy Khakona said: “We are yet to receive the subventions. We expected that it could be before the league kicks off.

“Anyway, it rests in the hands of the league administrators. We will still wait.”

But TNM plc head of brand and marketing Madalitso Jonazi said Sulom would be better-placed to comment on clubs accessing subventions which are part of the K150 million sponsorship.

In an interview, Sulom general secretary Williams Banda said: “We are on course finalising the requirements to enable TNM release the funds.”

FAM competitions and communications director Gomezgani Zakazaka said there are conditions which clubs are supposed to meet before the association can release the funds.

He said: “It’s comply and access and once the conditions are met, the first installment will be released.”

The conditions include proof of current bank account held in the name of the club, submission of an application form signed by two officials, clearly stating the usage of funds and the value the money will add to the development of the game.

Haiya had not responded to our questionnaire at press time at 4pm, but he is on record as having promised to release the funds before the start of the season.
