Comoros confirm Bingu Stadium as ‘home’ ground

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) say their Comoros counterparts have confirmed Bingu National Stadium as their home venue for their African National Championship (Chan) qualifying play-offs first round first leg against the Flames.

FAM competitions and communications director Gomezgani Zakazaka in an interview on Tuesday also said the islanders have chosen Sunday March 2 as the date of the fixture with the return leg set for Saturday March 8 at the same venue.

But he said they were yet to be communicated to about their travel itinerary.

“But the Flames are departing tomorrow [today] for Lilongwe to step up their preparations,” said Zakazaka.

Comoros opted to play their home match at BNS because their national stadium does not meet requirements set by the Confederation of African Football to host international competitive matches.

Despite cries from some quarters on Flames coach Kallisto Pasuwa’s decision to drop some experienced players, Zakazaka said the coach has made no additions.

“There are no changes to the squad. It is as it was except for [Olson] Kanjira, who did not report to camp as he is preparing for his trip to Japan for trials,” he said.

Winner of the match between Malawi and Comoros will face winner between Egypt and South Africa in the second round of the qualifying play-offs.

The last time the two teams met was at the 2023 Cosafa Cup in South Africa where Malawi won 2-0.

But Pasuwa sounded a word of caution after the draw, saying they are now a force to reckon with in African football.
