Dapp Mikolongwe graduates 220

The Development Aid from People to People (Dapp) Mikolongwe Vocational School on Friday graduated 221 in various technical courses including renewable energy, community development, brick laying, textile and designing and fabrication.
Speaking during the graduation ceremony, guest of honour Chriss Nawata Chiradzulu Aids district coordinator, said the skills acquired by the graduates are critical to economic development because they translate directly into productivity.
“I challenge the graduates to be innovative and creative because the world is very competitive. The technical skills acquired will help the graduates to start their own businesses and reduce youth unemployment,” said Nawata.
Dapp Mikolongwe principal Augustus Kaliyati said the college runs 10 courses which equip the students with skills to venture into small-scale businesses.
“We encourage our students to be entrepreneurs. They might find some jobs, but we emphasise that they start their own businesses because they have skills which can give them wide opportunities and contribute to national development,” said Kaliyati.
He added that to date, the college has graduated over 7 000 students, arguing that Malawi has a shortage of technicians who are critical to economic development.
