Dodma bails out survivors in Salima

Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma) in partnership with M&B Company has supported 197 households affected by floods in Salima District with 1 280 bags of maize.

The donation is part of disaster response amid heavy rainfall in some parts of the country, especially the Southern Region and lakeshore areas.

In Salima, the rains have killed two people in Traditional Authority (T/A) Kalonga and destroyed people’s homes in other T/As such as Pemba and Makanjira.

Yesterday, Dodma commissioner Wilson Molen inspected the affected families besides leading the distribution of food items to beneficiaries.

He said: “Persistent rain has affected some districts for the past two days and Salima is one of them as the report we received suggests that 197 households have been affected, particularly in T/A Makanjira and others.

“We have also heard reports from Mangochi, Mwanza, and Mulanje that houses have been affected by these rains.”

Moleni thanked M&B Company, the manufacturer of Tamu-Tamu drinks, for supporting the response.

“We are pleased that M&B supported us with 1 280 bags of maize worth K81.5 million. The maize will be distributed to T/As Kalonga and Pemba,” he said.

M&B Company general manager Maxcity Makhuwira said they donated the maize to lessen the people’s suffering.

“The donation is part of our corporate social responsibility. We work here in Salima and we should serve the same people we work with,” he said.

On his part, T/A Kalonga said the relief food will help the affected families cope with hunger as they seek shelter in evacuation centres and other people’s homes.

“I appeal to beneficiaries not to sell the maize as doing so will defeat the purpose of the donation,” he said.

According to the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services, the country is expected to receive heavy rains until today
