Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has appointed businessperson Alfred Gangata as its vice-president responsible for the Central Region.

He has replaced Zeria Chakale who quit the party last year to join the Malawi Congress Party, a key partner in the governing Tonse Alliance.

In a letter to Gangata that The Nation has seen, DPP administrative secretary Francis Mphepo said: “The party’s central committee appointed him with immediate effect in accordance with Article 9, Subsection 5[a] of the DPP constitution.”

The DPP, which was booted out of power in the June 2020 court-sanctioned fresh presidential election, has a vice-president in each of its four regions; the North, Centre, East and South.

The party recently made several other appointments, including the appointment of Jean Mathanga as its national director of elections, William Susuwele Banda as national director of research, Shadric Namalomba as national publicity secretary and Lev Luwemba as deputy national director of operations.

DPP also recently expelled Kondwani Nankhumwa, who was DPP vice-president responsible for the South, alongside 10 others after accusing them of undermining party leader Peter Mutharika’s authority and disrespecting party leadership.

The Nankhumwa faction was faulted mainly for calling, leading and attending the December 6 2023 nullified national governing council (NGC) meeting in Lilongwe.

DPP also fired Zomba Chisi MP Mark Botomani who was serving as Public Accounts Committee of Parliament chairperson, former secretary general Grezelder Jeffrey, former director of women Cecelia Chazama, publicity secretary Nicholas Dausi and executive members Joe Thomas Nyirongo and Ken Msonda.
