Musicians Union of Malawi Eastern Region chapter has organised a concert to raise funds for renowned musician and producer ‘Sir’ Paul Banda who is unwell.

The chapter’s treasurer Michael Kasito in an interview said they decided to come up with the initiative knowing the various challenges that the prolonged illness has brought to ‘Sir’ Paul Banda.

“Since he needs dialysis, he has to travel to the hospital often. He also needs a special diet and other needs. We thought it wise to come in and do our part,” he said.

Kasito said there will be an appeal during the show to donate funds and they have invited politicians and other prominent people who they hope will lead the cause.

“Paul Banda has contributed so much to the country’s music industry. Now that he is facing challenges due to an illness, we want to come in and help,” he said.

Kasito, famed for his song, Nyamuhanga, said they are hoping to raise at least K5 million.

“The concert will take place at Mlambe Motel in Balaka on December 9 and we will have many artists, including Billy Kaunda, Mlaka Maliro, Lambanie Dube, Charles Sinetre, Isaac Liotcha, Enort Mbandambanda and Alleluia Banda.

On his part, Sinetre said it is an honour to come to Paul Banda’s aid since he is the pioneer of Balaka music.

“He saw many artists’ career take off. Now that he is sick, we all need to rally around and support him until he is fine,” he said.

Musicians Union of Malawi president Vita Chirwa hailed the Eastern Region MUM chapter for the initiative.

He said: “This is one way of being there for each other when one of us is in need. As musicians, we belong to one big family and we will always stick up for a brother or sister when necessary. It is important for ‘Sir’ Paul Banda who has contributed a lot to the development of music in Malawi to be fully supported and not abandoned in his hour of need. It is a fundraiser, but it is also a concert in his honour.”

For those who would like to directly offer their financial support, they may do so using Paul Banda’s number 0983913455.
