Ecobank Malawi distributes K100m worth of relief items
Ecobank Malawi has distributed K100 million worth relief items to survivors of Tropical Cyclone Freddy in some evacuation camps in Mulanje and Phalombe districts.
The bank distributed 37.5 metric tonnes of maize flour, 12.5 metric tonnes of beans, soya pieces, sugar, salt, cooking oil, soap, plastic buckets, plates, cups and blankets to 1 500 households.
Speaking during the handover in Phalombe, Ecobank Malawi head of human resources Frank Sabola said their help is in line with the bank’s pan-African mission.
He said: “We believe that this will go a long way in uplifting and rebuilding these households and also complement government efforts during this crisis. “We would also like to thank the Department of Disaster and Management Affairs [Dodma] for all the guidance and logistical support rendered in making this possible.”
Dodma director of preparedness and response Moses Chimphepo thanked Ecobank Malawi for fulfilling its commitment.
He said: “This is a true testament that as Dodma, we are committed to ensuring that those affected by the Cyclone Freddy are reached out and assisted.
“We, therefore, would like to re-assure the general public that we will relentlessly work towards channeling all assistance received from corporate bodies such as Ecobank towards the intended purpose.”
Tropical Cyclone Freddy has killed more than 600 people and displaced thousands others.
