Eli Njuchi warms up chilly Mzuzu
In the past weekend, the Northern Region city of Mzuzu was a beehive of activities, with two major events taking place.
From Friday to Saturday evening, journalists from across Malawi commemorated this year’s World Press Freedom Day (WPFD).

On the other hand on Saturday, the consecration of Yohane Suzgo Nyirenda as bishop of Mzuzu Diocese of the Catholic Church which President Lazarus Chakwera attended was the other major event.
This meant the number visitors in the city swelling like it has never done before. These visitors had a rare entertainment treat when Mzuzu’s blossoming entertainment joint Linde Lounge and Grill hosted a performance from Blantyre-based Afro-dance artist Eli Njuchi supported by Mercha.
But the event, dubbed Saturday Unplugged, was dogged by unfavourable weather conditions as it rained for the better of the night. However, that did not deter fun-seekers from flooding the entertainment spot.
While others sought refuge under shades, the rowdy ones saw little reason to be under any cover. They dripped themselves in the rain and made friends with the muddy dancing arena.
Immediately after doing away with their WPFD activities, a majority of the press men escalated the celebration mood by joining the fun-seekers at Linde Lounge and Grill.
By the time the majority joined the fun after the downpour had subsided, the event’s curtain-raiser, Mercha, was already done with his part. It was now the turn of headliner Eli Njuchi to lift the mood to its crescendo.
He did not have to worry much as some of his popular compositions such as Gu Gu Gu, Mai Ine, Tempolale, Yabaya, Mijedu and Kumalo a Zii, had his fans on their feet throughout his set.
By the time he left the stage after 90 minutes, patrons had had enough of the Honest hit-maker.
After the live performance, club DJs took over the mantle and did their best to sustain the tempo.
Amapiano and dance music dominated their selection to ensure that imbibers parted into the wee hours of Sunday.
