Blantyre City Council (BCC) management said the council is underperforming in some sectors because of lack of adequate funding and cooperation with the public.

Addressing a press conference in Blantyre on Saturday, BCC chief executive officer Ted Nandolo appealed for proper care of structures and equipment so that they stay longer.

“We have an annual budget of K2 billion (about $5m), but we collect far much less. We do not get any funding from government. All our funding comes from our own revenue collections through fees and rates,” said Nandolo.

BCC has come under intense criticism from the public for poor delivery of services. Among the issues the public have raised are sanitation and unattended sewage blockages.

Nandolo blamed the services consumers for all the mess which, he insisted, could have been avoided.

“When sewage is broken and we go to attend to it, we find different things such as maize cobs, stones and even foetuses,” said Nandolo.

He also condemned the tendency of squatting.

The city council has plans to build a two storey packing place in Blantyre and extend dual roads to Illovo in Limbe among other plans in the cty.
