Malawi former Secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) Alfred Upindi has died.

Upindi who served during Hastings Kamuzu Banda’s one party regime and later in Bakili Muluzi’s administration in a multiparty Malawi, died at a hospital in South Africa today afternoon, Nation Online has learnt.

Malawi’s Minister of Health Catherine Gotani Phiri confirmed Upindi’s passing. She did not have fine details.

Upindi was a career civil servant from the time of Dr Kamuzu Banda’s one party regime and he rose through ranks to become secretary in the OPC.

Following the wind of change when Malawians opted for multiparty in 1993, the first democratic president, Muluzi, under United Democratic Front (UDF), maintained Upindi as SPC until his retirement later.

Upindi moved on to manage his several businesses which included Nantipwili Transport and Distributors after his retirement in government.

Nation Online did not establish what he was suffering from and which hospital he was admitted to, but unconfirmed reports stated he was sent to South Africa on a government ticket.
