CCAP Synod of Livingstonia general secretary the Reverend William Tembo said the General Synod wants to lead in bringing unity ahead of the polls.

He said: “When politicians do things on their own, we have seen it, they hack each other, too much violence, but the synod wants to come in. We want to let God come in, guide us on this election, because all we want is peace.

“The General Synod wishes all aspirants all the best. We have invited all aspiring presidential candidates, including President Lazarus Chakwera as well as former presidents Peter Mutharika and Joyce Banda.”

Tembo said Chief Justice Rizine Mzikamanda, Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara, Inspector General of Police, Army Commander and representatives of Public Affairs Committee (PAC) and the Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM) are also on the guest list.

“As the official campaign period comes, we want to sit and talk to each other about the love we share. We are the warm heart of Africa and we must show and live that,” he said.

The prayers will come just weeks before PAC also brings together all presidential candidates during a peace declaration signing and prayers after the presentation and approval of nomination papers.

Earlier, presidential press secretary Anthony Kasunda said  Chakwera is committed to promoting peace, unity and democratic governance in the country.

The prayers come amid a spate of violence ahead of the elections.

Peace and security expert Master Dicks Mfune said there is a need to have a dialogue with all the parties and actors to find a compromise solution.
