Govt calls for collaboration in fighting human trafficking

Minister of Homeland Security Peter Mukhito has called for urgent, coordinated action to combat human trafficking and migrant smuggling, warning that these crimes endanger lives and threaten national security.

Speaking in Lilongwe during the launch of two initiatives—the Better Migration Management (BMM) project and the Regional Operational Centre in Khartoum (Rock)—Mukhito described trafficking and smuggling as serious violations of human dignity that require immediate attention. He stressed that addressing these challenges demands collaboration among the government, development partners, neighbouring countries, and local stakeholders.

According to Mukhito, such cooperation is key to building systems that protect vulnerable people while strengthening national security.

“Human trafficking destroys lives, while migrant smuggling exploits desperation. These are crimes against human dignity, and we must act now,” he said. “Government is ready to lead, but we cannot do it alone. We need partners, civil society, communities, and citizens.”

Mukhito stated that the BMM project reflects a strong commitment to protecting human dignity, strengthening systems, and taking decisive action against trafficking and smuggling. He noted that the initiative comes at a critical time as these challenges continue to grow. The project, he added, will support practical interventions such as strengthening laws, building technical capacity, and improving victim protection.

He also highlighted Malawi’s position along the southern migration route, noting that while the country is known for being peaceful and welcoming, these qualities can also expose it to exploitation by traffickers and smugglers.

International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Immigration and Border Governance Programme Officer Jeremiah Joshua said the BMM project aims to ensure that migration through Malawi is safe, orderly, and regulated.
