Ministry of Education has yet to identify another contractor to finalise the construction of hostels and a kitchen at Machinga Secondary School.

In September this year, the ministry terminated a K2 billion contract with Nangaunozge Construction Company for alleged non-compliance and performance.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, the ministry’s Principal Secretary Chikondano Mussa said they will tender after assessing the work left by the previous contractor.

She said: “We have sent back our engineers and architects to make assessments on what more is remaining in terms of work so that when we are re-tendering, we should know the scope of work we are re-tendering.

“After everything, we will go for evaluation and put into papers notifications of award.”

But reacting to the development, Friends of Machinga Trust chairperson Sinoya Winesi, whose group pushed for the termination of the contract, faulted the ministry for failing to finalise all processes by this month.

“We are not sure if that team is indeed at the site because the assessment was done already. So as of now, we are trying to find out from them about where things stand because time is elapsing,” he said.

In 2018, government offered Nangaunogze Construction Company, a contract to construct eight boys’ hostels and a kitchen at the institution and the work was expected to be completed in 2019.

However, delays to complete the project and failure to implement certain specifications led to the ministry to terminate the contract.
