Hold duty-bearers accountable—Nice

National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust has urged communities in Blantyre District to hold duty-bearers accountable on projects implemented in their areas.

Blantyre District Nice civic education expert Glory Ngosi said this on Saturday during a meeting between community members from group village head Mtenje and the district council’s officials.

She said lack of knowledge among citizens on their role in development activities was one of the factors affecting development in the district.

“We want the community to know their roles and also to encourage them to hold duty-bearers accountable, ensuring that they are handling projects in a transparent and accountable manner,” said Maulidi.

She also advised citizens to avoid being involved in activities such as theft of projects’ materials.

Blantyre district social welfare officer Bertha Chidzalo said there is a need for communities to understand the need for equal participation of men and women in development activities.

She said: “We established structures at community and district levels to ensure that women are also participating in development activities because we understand that women play a great role in every society.

“We also encourage community members to report to authorities whenever they face abuse either at the workplace or in the community.”

Group village head Ntenje thanked Nice for the meeting, saying it has helped his subjects to understand their roles; hence, they will be able to take part in development activities. The meeting was organised with funding from the European Union under the Boma Lathu Project
