House will discuss ID scandal—Chaponda

Leader of Opposition in Parliament George Chaponda has said the House is today set to debate the issue surrounding the use of national identity cards in the upcoming September 16 2025 General Elections.

He said this after some opposition members of Parliament yesterday stormed the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) warehouse in Kanengo, Lilongwe where National Registration Bureau (NRB) was processing national identity cards deemed to be used to rig next year’s elections.

Chaponda said they will demand an explanation from the government on the discovery of the IDs.

He said: “We went to NFRA warehouses in Kanengo to assess the availability of maize but we were surprised to find people associated with the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) working there.

“And we also found thousands of national ID cards and NRB equipment. We believe there is a calculated plan by the MCP to rig the elections. So, we need an explanation regarding what is happening at NFRA premises.”

Leader of the House Richard Chimwendo Banda agreed that the matter be discussed today as Thursday is Private Members Motion day.

First Deputy Speaker Madalitso Kazombo curtailed the debate on the matter and ordered the House to resume government business.
