How Burning Spear set Malawi ablaze

Legendary Jamaican reggae artist Burning Spear on Saturday set Civo Stadium in Lilongwe ablaze with an impressive two-hour performance despite his age.

The 79-year-old musician, who came to Malawi as part of his One People Africa Tour, mesmerised fun lovers who braved  the fuel shortage crisis to see him perform.

In the thick of things: Burning Spear

With over 20 albums to his name, Burning Spear performed a mix of timeless hits that made his Malawi debut a night to remember.

Despite delays due to sound check, the patrons, many wearing red, green and yellow attire and carrying Rastafarian flags, were not disappointed.

Opening acts included local and regional reggae talents such as Positive Yut, Lambanie Dube, Kominique and Hax Momba.

By the time Lawi came, anticipation had reached its peak. An hour later, Burning Spear stepped on stage. The crowd roared.

The two-hour set, which started at 10pm, was a masterclass as Burning Spear delivered hit after hit, transitioning between his microphone and the rhythmic beats of the congas, his drums.

Fans were treated to classics such as  Slavery Days, Mek We Dweet,  Calling Rastafarian, Jamaica and Zion Higher, each track connecting with the crowd and leaving no room for a dull moment.

Spear’s powerful vocals and his commanding stage presence defied his years as he drew fans into the messages of unity, resilience and hope that defined his music.

The crowd remained fully engaged until the final. At exactly 12.30 am, the reggae legend offered words of gratitude and encouragement, leaving the stage with a message to his Malawian fans.

“Thank you for coming out tonight, Malawi. Remember to always watch your back and never give up in life,” he said.

While some people were disappointed that the Marcus Garvey singer did not perform some of his popular tracks, the general reaction was positive.

For fans like Harry Pondani who travelled from Mangochi, the night offered a rare, once in a lifetime experiance.

“Never in a million times did I ever think I would be standing here to witness greatness. This has been the best experience and I’m pleased to say I saw Burning Spear perform live in my life,” he said.

Following his debut in Malawi, Burning Spear’s One People Africa Tour will continue with a final performance in Nairobi, Kenya, having already performed in Zimbabwe, South Africa and Zambia.

After Spear’s set, the night continued with performances from local artists such as Billy Kaunda, Zembani Band, Skeffa Chimoto, Phyzix and The Black Missionaries.
