Innobuild Company Limited has provided machinery and workforce to Mzuzu City Council to help the authorities manage waste.

The K4.2 million donation comes at a time when the council has been failing to manage waste at its Msilo Dumpsite due to shortage of equipment.

The situation puts communities at risk of contracting diseases.

Mzuzu City Council chief executive officer Gomezgani Nyasulu said the council approached Innobuild Company Limited after noting that dumping waste in the open was not sustainable.

Speaking during the handover on Thursday, Innobuild chief executive officer Billy Chiotha said his company wants to complement the efforts to make the environment in Mzuzu cleaner.

“As you are aware, poor waste management fuels cholera. Some of the waste at Msilo is collected from residents who are our clients. It is imperative, therefore, for us to come in and support the council,” he said.

Among other waste management activities, Innobuild plans to dig trenches where the accumulated waste will be buried.

“Initially, waste was spilling at the surface which was not good for the health of residents, particularly those residing closer to the dumping facility,” he said.

A resident close to Msilo Dumpsite, Owen Mhango said the bad smell emanating from the rotting waste at the dumping site was becoming unbearable.

“What Innobuild has done is commendable. We will now have a breath of fresh air,” he said.
