Intercity buses launched in style in Lilongwe
Intercity Express Bus Services has launched a bus service in Lilongwe aimed at giving passengers a cheaper public transport option and enable them to buy tickets in advance as opposed to paying on the spot.
Speaking during the launch at Nsungwi in Area 25, Lilongwe on Wednesday, the company’s general manager Louis Chipofya said they will start with five buses which were set to start operating yesterday between Nsungwi and Lilongwe Old Town Bus Depot via either Area 49 or Kanengo.
“We have a city permit that the council gives to operators like us. However, there is no special arrangement with the city council because Malawi does not have special road lanes for buses as is the case in other countries,” he said.
Chipofya pointed out that the intercity bus fares will be lower than the current transport options on the market to ease passengers burden in the current economic situation.
“One can pay using mobile money and pay for a single day, one week or even a month’s fare. This is one of the best parts because the passengers will not be inconvenienced in situations where bus conductors spend time looking for change,” he said.
Chipofya added that customers who buy bulk tickets will have up to 20 percent discount and that when paying through mobile money, they can access the Intercity service by dialing *1964# while those with smart phones will be able to download Intercity App on their phones.
Amos Pongolani , a prospective customer who was present during the launch, described the new bus service as a good development which will provide an alternative to available modes of transport. Malawi’s public transport system in cities is largely dependent privately-run minibus taxis.
