Karonga acting district commissioner Frank Mkandawire has commended Karonga Central legislator Leonard Mwalwanda (Malawi Congress Party) for initiating a teacher’s house project at Mlare Primary School.

The K15 million three-bedroom house was built with funds from the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

In an interview on Monday, Mkandawire urged other legislators in the district to emulate the example set by Mwalwanda.

He said: “If the country is to achieve the aspirations outlined in the Malawi 2063 development plan, then we should promote human capital development.

“For this to be achieved, we have to create a conducive environment for learning and teaching as well as providing good accommodation for teachers.”

Mkandawire said the construction of the house showed that the district council can utilise CDF to build teachers’ houses.

On his part, Mwalwanda thanked government for raising CDF to K100 million, saying the hike enabled him to initiate the house project.

“Government recognises the role teachers play in shaping the country’s citizens. This is why I initiated the project in the constituency to create decent accommodation for teachers,” he said.

Mwalwanda thanked traditional leaders, school management committee and parents and teachers’ association members for the coordination and cooperation during the construction period.

“There are other six teachers’ houses being constructed using CDF money. Others are at 75 percent while others are at 98 percent completion level due to late payment of construction materials,” he said.

Chiwondo Zone primary education adviser Batamiwe Mwalwanda said the house will ease accommodation challenges at the school.
