Karonga District outlines school structure projects

Karonga District Council chairperson Atusaye Mwenifumbo says the council will tap K150 million from the K5 billion Constituency Development Fund (CDF) for school infrastructure development to enhance teaching and learning in the district.

He said this on Saturday at Karonga Demonstration Primary School during the 2026 Open Day which Ulalo Organisation conducted for Building Education Foundations through Innovation and Technology (Befit) programme.

Said Mwenifumbo: “The council has spared K150 million from CDF to improve school infrastructure development in the district and provide inclusive education.

“However, let me appeal to stakeholders and education authorities to equally distribute resources to all deserving schools when the council allocates them the funds.”

Karonga district Befit coordinator Amos Chauma said the programme is achieving its objectives as many learners in lower classes are able to read basic words and follow numerical calculations.

Karonga district director of education and sports Mercy Mayuni described Befit as crucial, saying it was addressing the dwindling quality of education standards.

“This programme is key in the implementation of the Malawi 2063 agenda whose strategy shifts the educational focus toward science, technology, innovation and skills development to support three main pillars of agricultural productivity, industrialisation and urbanisation,” she said.

Befit is a government-led digital learning initiative to boost reading and mathematics skills for children from Standard One to Four
