Kasiya Mine project set to rollout within 5 years

Sovereign Metals Limited, developer of Kasiya Rutile and Graphite Mine in Lilongwe, says the project could be rolled out within five years subject to approvals.

The company said the projection show that the mine has a lifespan of over 30 years.

In its March update, the firm said it will publish a draft Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (Esia) report in the second half of 2026, followed by an application for a mining licence.

Sovereign Metals Limited social performance manager Garth Lappeman said the company is finalising a definitive feasibility study to guide government decisions on licensing and investment.

“The studies confirm the project is feasible and provide information for authorities, investors and lenders to decide on the next phase,” he said, .

Lappeman said Sovereign Metals has prioritised transparency, engaging about 10 000 stakeholders since exploration began in 2019.

In an interview, Senior Chief Khongoni said the company has been forthcoming and has already implemented corporate social responsibility initiatives.

Chamber of Mines and Energy national coordinator Grain Malunga said the company is following due process, urging patience as it is yet to apply for a mining licence.

Sovereign Metals says it has paid K353.6 million to compensate 2 384 landowners between 2022 and 2025 for exploration disturbances.

The Kasiya deposit is touted as the world’s largest rutile resource, with about 18 million metric tonnes and the second-largest graphite resource at 24.4 million tonnes.

Rutile is used in products such as paints, cosmetics and sunscreens while graphite is key in electric vehicle batteries .
