Former Malawi national football team coach Kinnah Phiri has been appointed deputy director of sports in the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Confirming his new role, Phiri said his major task will be to revamp sports at community level across the country.

Said the Flames and Nyasa Big Bullets legend: “I have not returned to the ministry as director of football but deputy director of sports, meaning my task is about development of all sports disciplines.

Kinnah: I am pleased to be part of this project

“This government is serious about promoting all sports codes and not only football and netball. I am very pleased to be part of this project.

“We are currently in the process of procuring sports equipment and next week I will embark on a mission  to identify challenges and possible solutions at regional level.”

He said they will also be distributing sports equipment  in youth centres.

Phiri’s appointment follows a pledge Minister of Youth and Sports Richard Chimwendo Banda made during the launch of the all-time Flames leading scorer’s book.

The minister described Phiri as a true legend who deserves to be honoured.

He said: “Let us all learn to honour our heroes, recognise them and use them for the betterment of the sport.

“The name Kinnah is what everyone wants to be associated with. As a ministry, we are committed to draw a new contract for Kinnah and give him an encompassing role not limited to football alone.

“We need to use Kinnah’s expertise and experience for the benefit of the nation.”

Phiri has since promised to work hard to realise government’s vision of developing sports.

He said: “I will use my experience, my celebrity status and my  connections to inspire young children, especially from the age of eight to 15 to take sports seriously.

“Those with potential in boxing, athletics, netball or any other sport will be given an opportunity to pursue their careers.

“We hope to start seeing results in about  three years time as the first two years’ will be dedicated to infrastructure development in local communities. We want to ensure there are youth centres all over the country.”
