Legendary fallen author Legson Kayira will be finally honoured on Malawian soil by the Malawi Writers Union (Mawu).

Mawu President Sambalikagwa Mvona said the awards are back and his office has already come up with names of authors to be awarded.

“We are awarding 12 authors as legendary authors. These are successful authors and we are recognising them for the impact their work has had on the society,” said Mvona

Mvona revealed that late Legson Kayira, Desmond Dudwa Phiri, John Gwengwe and author of Mkwatibwi Wokhumudwa P.P Litete are among the awardees.

The awards come after a ten year silence on the legendary author’s awards.

The legendary authors awards recognise people who have authored articles and books that have made an impact on the Malawian society. The first edition of the awards was held in 2003 and 10 authors were awarded.

Mvona said his office will announce the actual date of the awards, but said it will be after the Peer Gynt Literary Awards.

“We wanted to recognise the legendary authors alongside winners in the Peer Gynt Literary Award,” he said

Mvona also said the other reason is that his office is still waiting for funding from companies on the legendary awards. He said they have written several companies and embassies to support them and the response is positive.

Meanwhile, Mawu has revealed plans to publish new anthologies, but says it needs support from the corporate world.
