Lilongwe continues to register high cholera cases compared to other districts in the country, prompting the district health office to seek support from corporate institutions and well-wishers to contain the outbreak.

Ministry of Health statistics indicate that 53 out of 133 cases registered as of March 24 were recorded in Lilongwe. The ministry’s statistics further show that since the onset of the pandemic, Lilongwe has recorded close to 12 000 cases followed by Mangochi with over 8 000 cases.

Nkoloma (L) hands over the items to Mvula

Speaking on Saturday when National Bank of Malawi (NBM) donated assorted medical items to Lilongwe District Health Office (DHO), the DHO spokesperson Richard Mvula said the situation remains dire.

“Most cases report late and we struggle to manage them because we don’t have adequate medical supplies,” he said.

The donation, valued at K3 million, was made by two NBM subsidiaries, namely NBM Pensions Administration Limited and NBM Capital Markets Limited.

In her remarks, NBM Capital Markets Limited business development manager Nenauthe Nkoloma said the company wanted to help Bwaila Hospital manage the outbreak.

“Looking at the rising cholera cases being recorded in Lilongwe, we felt we could help to manage the outbreak by donating most needed medical supplies,” she said.

The donation included detergent soap, hand sanitiser, chlorine and toilet papers.
