Mafco brace for loss of five players

Mafco coach Stereo Gondwe says he has plans to mitigate effects of the imminent departure of five players who might be out for six months undergoing Malawi Defence Force (MDF) training.

He said this at Presidential Hotel in Lilongwe on Friday on the sidelines of the 2012/13 TNM Super League prize presentation ceremony. Mafco won the Best Team Management Award.

“Players such as Bester Phiri, John Banda, Wongani Mwenewanda, Richard Mbulu and Paul Ndlovu are certainly bound for training in the next recruit,” Gondwe said.

“But that is no cause for worry for us as we welcomed back 18 players who completed the training towards the end of last season.”

The 18 returnees include Saidi Mtekama, Sadani Magwere, Suzgo Chirwa, Spider Kasiyamo, Mphatso Magetsi and Jimmy Mzunga.

“Our aim for next season is to continue from where we left off last season. We were 12th in the 2011/12 season, but we improved to finish 10th last season on 38 points at par with Moyale Barracks. Our aim was to finish in the top eight, but we failed. We have learnt from last season and we hope to be in the top six,” Gondwe said.
