Mahatma Gandhi Road temporarily closed

After about two months of inactivity, construction works of slip lanes on the Mahatma Gandhi and Kapeni Road in Mount Pleasant in Blantyre have resumed, with Blantyre City Council announcing a temporal closure of part of the road.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the council’s chief executive officer Alfred Chanza said the road temporarily closed on Thursday and will be open for traffic on Thursday February 24 2022.

Constructions works underway on Mahatma Gandhi Road

Reads the statement in part: “The council advises road users to use alternative routes and road signs will be placed strategically to promote traffic flow.”

Initially, the road being constructed by Einstein Construction was scheduled to be completed by December 2021.

The delay irked Blantyre residents who complained about potholes that developed on the abandoned road site.

In an earlier interview, Chanza attributed the delay to a change in design of the road to accommodate unforeseen challenges.

He said the project faced geo-challenges as the surface was water-logged, as such, they had to relocate Blantyre Water Board pipes and electricity poles.

The council launched the six-month project in July last year after being allocated K9.1 billion to upgrade road roads in the city.

The roads include Ndirande-Nkolokoti, Mahatma Gandhi-Kapeni, Michiru-Likhubula, Newlands-Manje via Chiwembe, Old Zomba-Mapanga (from Machinjiri to Mapanga, joining Zomba Road), Namiwawa-Sunnyside and Lali Lubani to Chinyonga.
