Malawi to host Sadc gender meeting

Minister of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare Patricia Kaliati says Malawi stands a chance to benefit from the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) Ministers of Gender Meeting.

She said this in Lilongwe yesterday when she briefed the media ahead of the meeting which starts today up to Friday.

Kaliati said the meeting gives Malawi a chance to share with other Sadc member States best practices that have made the country register tremendous progress in gender issues.

Kaliati: We will share best practices

She said: “The meeting is going to remind us where we are and where we are lacking.

“According to the gender index and assessment Malawi is moving forward in the implementation of the Gender Equality Act of 2013. We have also seen a lot of women rise to top leadership positions lately.”

UN Women Malawi country representative Letty Chiwara said gender mainstreaming remains a key issue in the Sadc region.

She said it is high time everyone took the responsibility of advancing women and girls at all levels.

“Women and girls have been left behind for a long time and gender mainstreaming will also help in gender budgeting, starting from the local levels to address the existing gender gaps,” said Chiwara.

NGO Gender Coordination Network chairperson Barbara Banda said the meeting has come at a time when the country is coming from another big gender event, Generation Equality, where similar issues were also discussed.

Malawi is hosting the meeting as the current Sadc chair country.
