MDF dominates Presidential athletics

The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) dominated the Presidential Initiative on Sports athletics competition at Kamuzu Institute for Sports last weekend.

In the men’s 100 metres, Wakisa Kaliyembe of Kamuzu Barracks (KB) was the champion followed by Symon Munthali of Parachute Battalion. Gift Chirwa, also of Parachute, came third.

In men’s 200 metres, Golden Gunde from KB was the winner while Kaliyembe and Gift Hausi (Parachute Battalion) come second and third respectively.

Gunde also won in 400 metres followed by Hausi. Chimwemwe Luna of Parachute was third.

Hausi came top in 800 metres, followed by Abina Chinga from Chinsapo on second and Mazuzo Kasten of Nsalu on third position.

Kephas Kasten of Nsalu won the 1 500 metres, Chinga finished second while Limbikani Marin of Parchute came third.

Veteran long-distance runner Francis Khanje of Kamuzu Barracks won the 5 000-metre race trailed by Gervazio Mpani of Kamuzu Institute for Sports.

In 3 000 metres, it was again Kasten who stole the show followed by Khanje and Chinga on second and third positions respectively.

In women’s 100 metres, Grace Mtukutu of Kamuzu Barracks was the winner. Sella Makhaza of Kabuthu was second while Edina Kadzakalowa, also of Kabuthu was third.

Mtukutu also won the 200 metres. She was followed by Charity Ndozi and Yona Yamikani, both of Kabuthu.

In 400 metres, the winner was Stella Kamakande of Kabuthu. Makhaza was second and Kadzakalowa finished third.

Kamakande also won in 800 metres. She was followed by Beatrice Chirwa and Naomi Laswell of Kamuzu Barracks.

In men’s shot-put, Macleod Chiweza, Joseph Chipanda and Peter Kamchikwi, all from Kamuzu Barracks, shared the top three positions respectively.

In each category, prizes for the top three positions were K4 000 (about $40), K2 500 (about $6.25) and K1 500 (about $3.75).
