The country’s prominent long-distance runner Henry Moyo finished sixth during the 90-kilometre Comrades Marathon in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, on Sunday.

This is probably the best result for the Malawi Police sub-inspector who finished outside the top 10 last year. In 2011, he failed to complete the race after sustaining an injury.

Moyo crossed the finishing line in 5:46:51 hours, 14 minutes behind the winner Claude Moshiywa of South Africa.

Moshiywa is the first South African to win the race in 21 years. Zimbabwean Stephen Muzhingi stuttered on his title defence after taking the 10th slot in 5:52:37 hours.

Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) president Godfrey Phiri has described Moyo’s result as inspiring.

“Although he has not won the title, we still feel his achievement is worth celebrating. Comrades Marathon involves hundreds of the best athletes from around the globe. It is not a joke to be among the top 10,” said Phiri.

Moyo is Malawi’s most successful ultra marathon runner who has won several international trophies.
