Mimosa Netball Club were all smiles on Saturday when, for the first time in six years, they beat Northern Region Netball League champions Lameck Sisters 9-8 to go top of the K2.5 million (about $6 250) Uncle Jose League.

Mimosa were trailing 7-3 at the close of the first-quarter with goal defender Hilda Chimtengo, shooter Tapiwa Chikowoka and centre Stella Kumwenda on top of their game.

But with the motivation Mimosa receives from Mzuzu City parliamentarian Professor Peter Mwanza, they were not mentally defeated.

They worked hard and caught up with their opponents in the second and final quarters before grabbing a late strike to win the game.

“They played their game relaxed, thinking they already won, but we consolidated our spot to the top and finally we grabbed the victory,” said Mimosa team manager Tamara Fweta.

The victory means Mimosa Queens top the eight-team league table with 16 points. Young Sisters are second with 14 points. Moyale Sisters are on third place with 12 while Happiness Sisters of Chibavi are fourth with 10 points.

Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) treasurer Jane Kachali Saidi, who also owns Lameck Sisters, said the result means standards of netball in the region are improving.

“We cannot be talking about one team always. As a teacher, I will not smile at such a child taking position one in class always because he or she will be boastful,” said Kachali.

Secretary for Mzuzu City Netball Committee Kondwani Nyirenda thanked teams for their spirited performance.
