Little known boxer Marshal Ali on Sunday recovered from a poor start to snatch a split-point decision against Malani Kayuni at Obligado Leisure Park in Mzuzu.

Lilongwe-based Ali was punished with strong jabs to his jaws in the first five rounds, leaving him staggering.

Kayuni’s fans singing “Paulendo! Paulendo!”, got a shock of their life as Ali came stronger in the last three rounds, throwing punches that left Kayuni’s face heavily bruised.

” I am grateful to record a fourth victory in eight professional bouts. People counted me out in the opening rounds, but you saw how I destroyed him. I wanted them to have value for their money,” Ali said after the fight.

Ali’s promoter Jida Zakaria said he felt compensated for the win, saying it was not easy to prepare for the fight. He promised to arrange more bouts for Ali..

While acknowledging the judges’ decision, Kayuni asked for a rematch. Trainer Gabriel Kondowe, blamed Kayuni’s loss on lack of training.

Northern Region Boxing Committee chairperson Chandiwira Moyo was shocked with Kayuni’s slump in form. He advised him to train hard to regain his lost glory.
