Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC) officials on Tuesday met Retired Chief Justice Richard Banda to brief him on projects they would like to undertake as well as present him with a strategic plan.
MOC president Oscar Kanjala and his committee met the First Gentleman, who is also a former president of the committee, at Kamuzu Palace where they presented the four-year plan whose ultimate goal is to produce at least five qualified athletes for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.
Kanjala on Wednesday confirmed that they briefed Banda about the OlympAfrica Project in Lilongwe and the forthcoming Mini-Olympic Games which Malawi will host later in the year.
“He was excited with the ideas and pledged his support to our projects. We went to see him in his capacity as our patron and our life member to brief him on a few developments that MOC has carried out,” Kanjala said yesterday.
“We also briefed him on our action plan which starts this year in preparation for the forthcoming Olympic Day in June. We also briefed him about the Commonwealth Games Federation Queens Baton which will pass through Malawi on January 24 2014.”
Since independence 49 years ago, Malawi has been sending athletes to major competitions, including the Commonwealth Games, on solidarity.
“He was excited with the idea of the OlympAfrica Project which was his brainchild when he was at MOC. He has given us a lot of drive. It was a fruitful discussion,” Kanjala said.
