When former President the late Bingu wa Mutharika died in April 2012, Malawians were shocked by his sudden death.

Following the news, there was drama as Cabinet ministers tried to cover up his death and kept denying that the president had died. This has prompted Gosm Films to produce a movie inspired by the events that unfolded during this time.

His death was mysterious: Mutharika

In an interview, Gosm Films director Isaac Misoya said the movie to be titled Is The President Dead? will explore the events that took place from the time the late president collapsed at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe to the time his death was confirmed.

“This will be our first big project since we started producing movies. We feel we have a role to play. Journalists did their part to notify the public, we will tell the story in its detail,” he said.

Misoya said they are yet to start shooting, but are almost done with pre-production level preparations.

“We are seeking advice and directions from relevant government authorities,” he said.

So far, the producers have K10 million for the project, but want to raise K25 million more to have a high quality production.

In a separate interview, local movie fan Zione Kefasi said the development is interesting.

“The only problem is that when these movies are out, we never get to see them,” she said. Lately, a number of local movies were produced and premiered in 2021, but not many Malawians have seen the movies since the filmmakers are yet to sell them the DVDs.
