Visiting Mozambican side GDHCB handed out a lesson on professionalism when they cancelled a two-goal deficit to beat Blantyre United 3-2 at Kamuzu Stadium on Sunday.

Ironically, Malawian Dangalira Mnelemba plotted the downfall of compatriots United to the Mocambola top-flight league side in this first of three international matches lined up this week.

The first lesson was that Malawian players should stop bad habits of playing for the crowds and devote themselves to efficiency, GDHCB coach Wedson Nyirenda said in a post-match interview.

“They are a good team but they must improve on forceful game. They need to force their way. The other thing is that they play to please the fans. They have to work in all areas,” said the Zambian.

Sparrow Msowoya and Osward Maonga put the Elia Kananji side ahead in 15th and 40th minute, a reflection of not their superiority but rather the Songo Province side’s early defensive gaffes.

“In conceding the first goal, our defender [Mucuapele Tembe] had his boots sticking into the ground because we have never played on a synthetic pitch,” Nyirenda noted.

Tembe made amends from a corner kick, heading freely and powerfully past an otherwise impressive United goalkeeper Peter Munthali on the 68th minute.

Lewis Macha and substitute Louis Miquissone had earlier made the most of United’s slack marking and gaps in defence to score in the 49th and 78th minutes respectively.

Kananji was left wondering how his charges were stretched wide and bullied off the ball in the second-half when the visitors proved why they are currently third-half way the Mozambique season.

“Our attitude when leading was bad. We took things for granted. The only goal they deserved was the first; otherwise, we gifted them the rest. They [GDHCB] are very professional in their approach,” said Kananji.

Mighty Wanderers and Evirom are next to get the lessons from GDHCB today and Thursday respectively at Kamuzu Stadium.

According to Wanderers general secretary David Kanyenda, charges for open stands are K200.
