MP commends synod for promoting education
Karonga South legislator Uchizi Mkandawire (Malawi Congress Party) has commended the Synod of Livingstonia of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) for complementing government’s efforts to promote education in the district.
The legislator, who is also Minister of Sports and Youth, said this on Friday evening during a dinner Karonga CCAP Girls Secondary School organised to raise funds for the construction of a multipurpose hall at the institution.
He said: “Government appreciates the role various churches play in the socio-economic development of this country. That is why I did not hesitate to honour the invitation so that I contribute to the project.
“Let me also commend the school management and the synod for being innovative by organising a number of fundraising activities instead of looking to government for support.”
In an interview, the school’s head teacher Chimwemwe Mithi said learners take their meals under a tree and use the church’s hall for national examinations.
He said: “We hold morning assemblies in the open which get disrupted during the rainy season.
“Above all, these girls are forced to walk to the church’s hall which is outside the campus during national examinations. Our target is about K159 million for the project.”
On his part, CCAP Synod of Livingstonia education department executive director Joseph Mnyimbiri said they were pleased that the school has embarked on the initiative.
“We will support the fundraising initiatives,” he said.
At the event, Mkandawire donated K1 million
