Gold medalist Grevazio Mpani leaves this Monday to compete with the best in 5 000 metres at the World Athletics Championship in Russia from August 8 to 10.

Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) president Godfrey Phiri confirmed on Thursday that he would accompany the Southern Africa Cross Country champion Mpani for the Russia event also called World Athletics Cup.

“I have high hopes that he will do well in Russia and achieve qualifying time for future championships. I am encouraged by reports from his coach. Heads of athletics associations have also been invited and that is why I am accompanying him,” Phiri said.

Coach John Mwathiwa on Thursday said Mpani was ready to replicate his exploits of winning gold at the regional cross country on March 2 in Lesotho after clocking 2:48:86 seconds.

“I know the boy better as I train. When I say he is in better shape, I just mean it. We are doing final touches to his training schedule and today we should take him for a malaria test,” Mwathiwa explained.

Mpani represents Malawi on the international stage some three weeks after Harry Sichale also overcame travel hitches to finish 17th at World Youth Championship in Ukraine.
