MRA to collect extraK70bn in 3 months
Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs has increased by K69 billion the revenue target for Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) by the close of the 2023/24 fiscal year on March 31 2024.
MRA commissioner general John Biziwick said this in Salima yesterday during presentation of awards to best performing MRA stations branded Commissioner General’s (CG’s) Awards
He said with the additional revenue, MRA is now expected to collect K245 billion in January 2024 from K218 billion, K174 billion from K155 billion in February and during the last month of March, K199 billion is expected to be collected from K176 billion.
Said Biziwick: “By December 2023, which is nine months into the fiscal year, we did very well and we were only short of the target by K5 billion, but more importantly is because in December alone we were able to beat the target by K20 billion, so we wanted to energise the staff to collect the additional revenue as presented in the Mid-Year Budget Review a month ago.”
He said one of the measures to energise the staff is the introduction of the CG’s awards to motivate the staff.
Biziwick also commended taxpayers for becoming tax compliant, thereby leading to good performance for MRA.
The awards were given in the categories such as Relegation Threatened Award to motivate officers who are struggling to do well, Rising Star Award to encourage staff who are showing improvements, Golden Boot Award, Hat Trick Award and the overall winner of Golden Boot Award.
During the awards, the Large Taxpayer Office (LTO) emerged the overall winner and in an interview deputy commissioner responsible for LTO, Rose Ngwira, attributed the success to teamworking spirit.
“As LTO our target is 70 percent of the total revenue to be collected by MRA, so that mandate drives us to do more to contribute the much needed revenue to the basket,” she said.
The award for Relegation Threatened, a live chicken, was presented to Salima, Mangochi, Mchinji, Chisinga, Mqocha and Nayuchi stations.
Rising Star awards went to Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) Karonga and Biliwiri stations.
The award for Hat Trick was given to stations such as Zomba, Dwangwa in Nkhotakota, Kasungu, Blantyre, Karonga, Mzimba, Mulanje, among others.
