Blantyre Sports Club (BSC) golf captain Keta Mulwafu ended his 10-month title drought by winning the clients’ category of the Minet Malawi Insurance Brokers Limited Invitational Golf Tournament on Saturday.

Although Willet Karonga was the overall winner, by design, the tournament’s sponsor chose to prioritise their clients’ category in a tournament which attracted a field of 70.

Played on stableford format, Mulwafu handicap (h/c) 14 had a decent score of 35 points to count out Kwanele Ngwenya (21h/c) to second position while Gift Chidya Gondwe (h/c8) was third with 33 points.

A total of four pars were the centrepiece of the captain’s triumph who got a K200 000 Game Stores shopping voucher and a trophy for his feat.

“It feels good to win since I last won in October last year. There was nothing special so to say, only that I was relaxed and in the process, I played good golf,” said Mulwafu.

Karonga (h/c12) also won the men’s category with 35 points after counting out Mulwafu, who in turn, counted out Ngwenya.

In his brief victory speech, Karonga said: “I was only lucky… I started badly, but the greens played so nice.”

In ladies’ category, Ulemu Luhanga (h/c27) showed no ‘manners’ by edging out her elder sister Bose Kamphulusa (h/c24) to second position. The former had 43 points against the latter’s 31.

“Playing with good golfers was an extra motivation for me and the three pars I had in the last three holes did the trick,” said Luhanga.

Hudson Kantwanje (h/c13) won the insurance category with 31 points while Bashir Shariff (hc20) triumphed in the seniors’ section with 32 points.

Connie Karuku was nearest to the pin in ladies category on hole 14 while Diana Kambale had the longest drive on hole 16.

In men’s category, Frank Jomo was nearest to the pin (12) while James Chimwaza had the longest drive (17).

All the other winners were also rewarded with shopping vouchers and trophies.

Minet managing director Delvin Khongono said they organised the tournament to interact with their existing and potential customers. “This golf tournament was all about appreciating the business that our clients give us. The other reason was to share with them developments that have taken place at Minet, their number one insurance brokers,” he said.
