Scottish duo The Twelfth Day is set to tour Malawi this month where, among others, it will hold music lessons with children in the country and workshops with the help of Music Crossroads Malawi.

From opposite ends of Scotland, Orcadian Catriona Price who plays the fiddle, and Esther Swift a harp player will be in Malawi from the 12th of August to 12th of September.

The pair is at the forefront of innovative, modern British folk music.

With a fresh, open-minded approach to song writing, the duo create a unique sound, interweaving masterful fiddle and harp playing with beautifully harmonised vocals in stylish and dynamic arrangements.

“We will be landing in Blantyre and are spending the first 10 days working with children from the Malawi Music Project at Likhubula House near the foot of Mulanje Mountain,” said Swift in an email interview.

The trip is under the project Twelfth Day’s Routes to Roots which will see the duo travel to four different countries on four different continents for a month each, over the next year and a half.

“We will share folk music traditions with the musicians we meet. We will have meetings and working with local musicians in each place. We will release an album of new music at the end of the project, inspired by what we’ve heard and the experiences we’ve shared, using recordings and sounds we’ve collected along the way.

“Canada is the first on our list, Malawi, then Brazil before wrapping up with an appearance in Mongolia. After this initial work, we are looking to meet and play with as many different types of musicians and singers as possible,” she said.

Music Crossroads Malawi director Mathews Mfune confirmed the visit of the UK artist.

“We will have workshops at Music Crossroads Centre and a concert at the British Council. We are currently working on a programme of their coming,” he explained.
