Must engages secondary school students in university courses

Malawi University of Science and Technology (Must) has called on secondary schools to visit public universities to familiarise themselves with its programmes and services.

Must communications manager James Mphande made the call on Wednesday when students from Maranatha Girls Academy toured the campus in Thyolo.

He said school visits are crucial, especially given the university’s limited resources to reach all prospective students.

“As a public university, we have an obligation to make the public aware of our programmes and services so that students are well-informed when making applications. School visits help us reach more students efficiently,” said Mphande.

He said most visiting schools come from the Southern Region, but he encouraged schools from other regions to make the trip despite logistical challenges.

During the visit, students toured the university’s facilities, interacted with current students and attended sessions explaining course requirements and selection criteria.

Shouna Namba, a Form Four student, said the trip clarified her career path.

“I have always wanted to do biomedical engineering but wasn’t sure which subjects I needed to excel in. From this trip, I have learnt that science subjects are key and we were able to mingle with university students who shared how they got here,” she said.

Maranatha Girls Academy head teacher Aaron Banda said the school organised the trip to expose students to higher education opportunities.

“We want our students to make informed decisions about their careers and visiting the university gives them a real sense of university life and the subjects they should focus on to achieve that goal,” he said.
