Kaponda: Youths are usually sidelines

The Network for Youth Development (NYD) has called on organisations who receive funding from development fund partners of Norway to include the youth in their programmes for sustainable development.

Network for youth development project officer Dumisa Kaponda made the call last week at a two-day workshop for Northern Region-based organisations that receive funding from development fund partners of Norway. The meeting was composed of field officers working in agriculture sector.

“Young people are usually sidelined in most development projects and yet they form the majority of the human resource. For any development to be sustainable the youth should be mainstreamed into such projects,” said Kaponda.

In their discussions, the youth officers observed that the youth have better decisions and increase efficiency, strengthen community capacity, contribute to youth development and enhances organisations’ relationship with the young people.

The officers bemoaned the high unemployment among them and lack of expertise, social injustices, early marriages and lack of funds which they said frustrate their efforts.
