New drama series in the offing

Film lovers will soon have a feel of a new television series dubbed Mushroom Shade.

It is expected to officially premiere on April 20 and has been produced by United States-based filmmaker Chawezi ‘Chaz’ Munthali, the brains behind the Cashgate scandal inspired production Highbrow and the 2023 release Misnomer.

Bucci and Zulu captured in one of the scenes

According to a trailer of the series, the storyline revolves around a childless couple of Phillip and Angella Sani. The two plan to seek medical attention, but a blame game ensues on who needs to see the doctor as both believe the problem lies with the other.

As demonstrated in Chaz’s previous two films, Mushroom Shade is another epic production in terms of picture quality, transitioning and execution of the script.

The cast includes experienced Mwai Simbota, Amos Msekandiana, Cynthia Zulu, Bucci, Ben Sam and Fortunata Makawa, who is making her film debut.

In an interview yesterday, Chaz said they are targeting a specific audience, hence, their decision to have it on YouTube. He said he wants many people to access the series by just subscribing to their YouTube channel.

“The story behind Mushroom Shade is about all aspects of life and relationships. I wanted to write something that everyone from the age of 17 going up can relate to. This is what is being depicted in the series,” he said.

The film producer said as the plot grows, new cast members will be brought on board.

In a separate interview, Makawa, who plays Angella Sani in the series, said viewers will enjoy watching the series. She said she is happy to see the positive feedback that the trailer has generated.

“This being my first feature as an actress, I am excited to be around the amazing talents that are nurturing my skills and role in the series. I am looking forward to the audience to experience this journey with us as they explore the different storylines in the series,” she said.

In a related development, Chaz has revealed that his two movie productions Misnomer and Highbrow will be available on YouTube starting from May as his contract with Showmax comes to an end.
