New party launched in Malawi

A political party called African Nyasaland Party (ANP) has been launched in the country after it got registered with Registrar of Political parties in Blantyre last week.

ANP  founding president Bishop Lawrence Sichinga told the press in Blantyre that the party would focus on uplifting the social and democratic being of Malawians.

“Malawians have been cheated for a long time and deserve strong leadership with democracy and governance, economic skills. Our belief is that leadership is a bottom-top approach issue not as it has been,” he said.

Sichinga said ANP will not go into any coalition with existing political groupings, saying electoral coalitions have not worked well in the recent past.

“Electoral coalitions are just a waste of time in the Malawi scenario. We will go sole and if possible allow others to join us when we form government,” said Sichinga.

According to him, ANP will field candidates in all the 193 constituencies.

“We are currently identifying candidates. Of course, we shall hold our convention to have duly elected office bearers, but what is at stake now is informing the electorate of our existence and ideology,” he said.

Sichinga said the electorate should get rid of recycled politicians.

“We have at heart issues of health, agriculture, education, business and economy, good governance and human rights among others. We want people to rule this country and not one person and his crew,” said Sichinga.

The launch of the party, which is the 51st comes seven months before Malawians vote in the May 20 2014 Tripartite Elections.

The polls are seen by civil rights and political commentators as litmus test to People’s Party (PP), which has not tested presidential and local government polls since its formation in 2010.
