The Presidential Netball Championships in the Blantyre Urban Zone reached the semifinal stage on Saturday at Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC) where newcomers suffered great losses.

However, Shizoleya Sisters proved to be a tougher side among the six teams in the annual competition as they managed to sail through to the semi-finals alongside old guards Woget Stars, Glass Bank Sisters and Chilomoni Sisters.

Woget Stars topped Group B with nine points from three straight victories over minnows Eastern College 29-0, Boozing Den 33-2 and Shizoleya 19-9. Shizoleya vented their anger on College and Boozing Den with 25-0 and 16-6 triumphs respectively.

In Group A, Glass Bank Sisters collected nine points to emerge as log leaders. They tortured Yidecom with a 26-1 thrashing before thumping Tithokoze and Chilomoni Sisters 29-2 and 17-6 in that order. Chilomoni earned their semi-final slot thanks to their 25-1 win over Tithokoze Sisters and a 22-4 walk-over past Yidecom.

“We did not feel like playing competitive games today. They were just training sessions for us,” said Woget Stars’ chairperson Dalitso Ameera Chinyama.

According to Blantyre District Netball Committee (BDNC) general secretary Annie Hanjahanja-Billie, the semi-finals will be played at a later stage when funds will be available.
