Candidate master Chiletso Chipanga, Joseph Nyambalo and Ken Foster have been seeded to participate in the national finals for the Presidential Chess Championships that will take place at Baptist Theological Seminary in Falls Estate, Lilongwe on Saturday and Sunday.

Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) publicist Gilton Nkumbwa said on Wednesday that the three will tussle for the crown against the nine individuals that earned their slots through the qualifiers few weeks ago.

Nkumbwa said Chipanga has been seeded due to his superb performance at the recent Commonwealth and South African Championships in South Africa where he finished on position 62 out of 814 contestants from the Commonwealth member States.

Nyambalo has been incorporated for being the country’s highest-rated player while Foster has been privileged by Chessam president Kezzie Msukwa as the best up-and-coming player.

During the qualifiers a couple of weeks ago, the South identified Gerald Phungu, Charles Nathaniel and Alfred Chinthere its representatives while the Centre produced Stanford Chiwambo, Hubert Nathambwe and Ackim Mwale as ambassadors. The North will be represented by Fiskani Mwagomba, Thom Phiri and Ronald Chimkute.

Joseph Mwale will not be able to defend the men’s title as he is currently in South Africa for studies. Nevertheless, the ladies category, whose titleholder is Linda Jambo, will be open to all female players.

“But everyone should be reminded that all participating players will meet own travel and accommodation costs,” said Nkumbwa.

Winner in the men’s category will receive K50 000 (about $125) and a trophy whereas In the ladies section, the winner will get K30 000 (about $75).
