Malawi Girl Guides Association has handed 70 bicycles to mentors in Senior Chief Maganga in Salima District to ease their mobility during outreach programmes.

Speaking on Tuesday during the handover in group village head (GVH) Ngolowindo, the association’s international commissioner MirriamNyoni said the bicycles will enable the mentors to reach many girls with education and human rights messages.

“We want the mentors to reach out to many girls to ensure that they continue with education,” she said.

One of the beneficiaries, Patience Likhutcha, commended Malawi Girl Guides Association for the bicycles.

“I am responsible for mentoring 25 girls. However, it was difficult to reach them due to mobility challenges. My job is to ensure girls who drop out of school return for classes. So, three girls have promised to return to school,” she said.

GVH Ngolowindo said many girls drop out of school in the area due to early marriages and pregnancies.

He said the organisation’s interventions have helped to change people’s minds towards education.

“I will support the mentors to disseminate messages against child marriages in the area,” said Ngolowindo.

Malawi Girl Guides Association donated the bicycles with support from World Food Programme, Unicef and UNFPA under the Joint Programme on Girls Education
