National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust has dared Luchenza Municipal Council to validate projects the council implemented in the previous financial year and new ones it intends to implement in the 2024/25 budget.

Speaking on Tuesday during a meeting, the council’s director of planning and development John Maneya said that during the previous budget, they constructed a new bus depot, water kiosks, urinals and dug a dumpsite.

“This year, we intend to continue improving our waste management by having a well-designated dumpsite for both solid and liquid waste, put tar on roads at the new bus depot and construct bridges,” he said.

However, some delegates asked the council officials to explain why the new bus depot was handed over for use when it was not finished.

“We need you to explain to us what you are doing on the above concerns and why you handed over the uncompleted facility,” said Charles Nyerere, Luchenza Civil Society Organisations Network chairperson.

In his response, Maneya said the council was aware of the concerns and it was committed to addressing them.

During the meeting, Nice Trust also asked Malawi Electoral Commission official Matthews Mphulupulu to explain to the participants the electoral reforms and other emerging issues.

He highlighted some of the electoral reforms, including registration for national identity (ID) cards to enable people to participate in an election.

“You need to encourage people to register for IDs for them to vote in next year’s tripartite elections,” said Mphulupulu.

Thyolo Nice Trust programmes officer Moses Kaunda expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the meeting.
