Women in Blantyre District have commended Community Savings and Investment Promotion (Comsip) Union Limited for empowering them economically.

They said this on Wednesday during a visit to Umodzi and Tiyanjane Comsip clusters in Chiswe Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Machinjiri in the district that include beneficiaries of Covid-19 Urban Cash Intervention.

Umodzi cluster community facilitator Eunice Chiwale said they were challenged to invest part of the money in income generating activities for sustainable development.

She said: “The K105 000 people received was divided for basic needs and saving in the Comsip cluster.

“We were equipped with business training skills that encouraged us to invest our money in small-scale businesses whose proceeds are improving our lives for the better.”

The cluster’s chairperson Rhoda Kanyole said Comsip has enabled them to boost their businesses.

She said: “Despite accessing soft loans from the cluster, Comsip linked us to Comsiv, one of its financial institutions, to get loans worth millions that have helped members build sustainable livelihoods.

“I received K500 000 that I invested in irrigation farming for maize and beans and got K1.3 million proceeds. I also started selling sweet potato.

“I have built a decent house and I pay fees for my two children.”

Umodzi Cluster member Elizabeth Befu said the financial and education support have made them self-reliant.

Comsip’s case worker Thandiwe Nyasulu said they are committed to supporting the poor to combat poverty.

“We are pleased with the progress that women in these clusters are registering in their endeavors. We will continue with the interventions to help more women become financially independent,” she said
