Nice takes civic education to prison

The National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust has taken its voter education campaign to prison.

On Friday, Nice engaged Mulanje Prison to remind inmates about the need to vote during the 2013 Tripartite Elections.

The campaign was spiced up by musician Dan Lu who dished a number of songs that satisfied the inmates. Lu reminded them, through his ‘Part of Life’ song, that to be in prison is part of life hence the need to take part in making decisions by choosing leaders of their choice through voting.

The prisoners themselves did not want to be outdone as they conducted a number of activities that included poems, songs and drama.

Mulanje district civic education officer Twambilire Mwabungulu said the inmates have been loyal to their country through registration and needed to complete the process.

“When registration took place in Mulanje, the inmates registered. We therefore came here to urge them to complete the process by voting in 2014,” said Mwabungulu.

He added that prisoners are Malawians too who should be involved in the leadership selection so that when they come out of prison, they should find the leaders they took part to choose,” he said.

Inmates asked Nice a number of questions that seemed pertinent. For example, one of them asked what would happen to him because he did not choose not to register.

“When I was out there, my area had not yet started registration but when I came here, I discovered that they had already registered?” asked the inmate.
