Nkhata Bay District intensifies campaign against online abuse

Nkhata Bay district gender and development officer Cecilia Mwasikakata says the district will intensify sensitisation meetings beyond the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) to end online harassment.

She said this on Monday during a meeting the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) held with the district technical working group.

Said Mwasikakata: “Much as we have not recorded any case of cyber bullying in the district, we find it imperative to intensify sensitisation meetings beyond the 16 Days of Activism against GBV.

“This will ensure that communities are aware of what is expected of them and ensure that they are not violating other people’s rights.”

She said they plan to conduct meetings, radio panel discussions and football and netball bonazas targeting various stakeholders to create awareness on the need to desist from online harassment.

On her part, MHRC principal political and civil rights officer Monica Namonde said she was excited that following different sensitisation meetings, some communities in the district now understand that cyber bullying is a crime.

“We are happy that through the awareness meetings that we had, people are coming to know that they must desist from online harassment,” she said.

Namonde urged stakeholders to join forces with MHRC to end all forms of GBV.

This year, the district is commemoration the 16 Days of Activism Against GGBV under the theme ‘Uniting against online harassment’.

MHRC is today commemorating this year’s Human Rights Day in the district.
